Big Changes to Federal Battery Rebates Coming in May 2026
✅ From 1 May 2026, battery rebates drop every 6 months (not yearly), starting with a 20–25% cut to the per-kWh rebate.
✅ Rebates will also be tiered by battery size, with larger batteries hit hardest (up to 40–50% less for 30–40 kWh systems).
✅ Timing matters: rebates are based on install date and installers are booking 3–4 months ahead. Pre-May installation spots are limited.
Accessing the Cheaper Home Batteries Program
Here's what you need to know:
The Cheaper Home Batteries Program has seen massive uptake since 1 July 2025, with 163,000+ installs, ~3.5 GWh added, and around $1.3b of the $2.3b funding already committed.
The Government expanded total funding to ~$7.2b and extended support to 2030, but rebate rules are set to tighten from 1 May 2026 (subject to regulations).
If you wait to install your battery after May 2026, you could miss out on up to $9,000 in rebate savings.
Available to homeowners, small businesses, and community groups installing batteries between 5–100 kWh (rebate applies to the first 50kWh of usable capacity).
Owners of existing systems can add another battery and still qualify. You can claim for multiple properties.
Must be installed with a new or existing solar system by a CEC-accredited installer.
